From French explorer to Pakistani billionaire; who are onboard the submersible (2024)

The rescuers are racing against time on Wednesday in search of the submersible which took wealthy tourists to see the wreckage from the 1912 Titanic disaster 12,500 feet undersea. The submersible is missing in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Canada. The Coast Guard ships from US and Canada detected underwater noises and the rescuers are narrowing their area of search towards the origin of sounds.

On Tuesday, the US Coast Guard said that the submersible had enough oxygen supply for 41 hours which means by now the submersible is out of the air and the chances of anyone surviving in that submersible stands low. The tourists might use some ways to conserve the oxygen supply and that makes the swift rescue operations more critical.

It was an expensive expedition with the trip priced at $2,50,000 for one person.

Who is on board?

1. Hamish Harding: British billionaire who is known for his adventurous activities. Harding is the chairman of the aviation company Action Aviation and before boarding the Titan submersible he expressed pride on social media. "Due to the worst winter in Newfoundland in 40 years, this mission is likely to be the first and only manned mission to the Titanic in 2023," he said.

Harding is known for his adventurous activities and in 2019 he was on board the "One More Orbit" flight mission. The mission recorded the fastest circumnavigation of Earth by aircraft.

2. Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman: Pakistan's father-son duo are on the Titan submersible as confirmed by their families. Shahzada Dawood is the vice-chairman of Engro Corporation, one of the largest conglomerates in Pakistan while his son Suleman is a fan of science fiction literature.

3. Paul-Henri Nargeolet: The 77-year-old French explorer holds the position of director of underwater research company that possesses legal ownership of the Titanic wreck. Having previously served as a commander in the French Navy, this individual possesses extensive experience in both deep-sea diving and minesweeping.

He is an experienced deep diver and during a 2020 interview with France Bleu radio, he said "I am not afraid to die, I think it will happen one day."

4. Stockton Rush: Founder and CEO of OceanGate, the company operating the Titan submersible. "Rush became the youngest jet transport rated pilot in the world when he obtained his DC-8 Type/Captain’s rating at the United Airlines Jet Training Institute in 1981 at the age of 19," according to his biography on OceanGate's website.
