Federal Aid
WGU is approved to offer qualifying students federal financial aid in the form of Pell Grants and student loans. You can fill out your FAFSA to see if you qualify for this federal aid.
Yes, Western Governors University (WGU) is a reputable and accredited online university that offers affordable and flexible degree programs. Its competency-based model allows students to progress at their own pace and provides personalized support from faculty and mentors.
WGU is fully accredited and is recognized by the federal government to receive student financial aid funds. You follow the requirements that you follow at any other school: fill out the FAFSA to determine how much aid you are eligible for, and have the results sent to WGU.
The average student loan debt for WGU undergraduates who borrowed for school and graduated between July 1, 2022, and June 30, 2023, was $15,218, with a median debt of $12,854.
Students who withdraw from WGU or stop progress through the 60% point of a six-month term of enrollment for which tuition is assessed will receive a prorated tuition refund. After that point, there is no provision for a refund. No fees will be refunded or prorated.
Even if you withdraw from WGU, you will be required to pay back any loan funds you borrow. Before you apply for aid, consider how you plan to repay the loans. Interest rates are currently modest, and repayment terms are reasonable. But you must be prepared to repay it whether you graduate or not.
Although WGU doesn't offer free laptops to students, the university continuously seeks ways to help students manage their educational expenses through financial aid, scholarships, and discounts to provide them with better opportunities to succeed in their academic journey.
How do I get 100% of Pell Grant?
The scheduled award is the maximum amount of Federal Pell Grant you can receive for the aid year if enrolled full-time for the full school year. A scheduled award represents 100% of your Pell Grant eligibility for that aid year.
Your total balance is divided into equal monthly payments based on the length of your selected program or course offering. If you complete the program or course offering before the stated length permitted, you will still be billed monthly until the total balance is paid in full. REFUNDS.
Tuition: $3,735 per 6-month term for the bachelor's degree; $3,940 per term for the master's portion.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Inspector General issued the findings of a long-awaited audit in which it concluded that Western Governors University (WGU) had defrauded the federal government over $700 million in student aid dollars for pretending to be something it was not.
Absolutely. Accreditation by an institutional commission that's recognized by the U.S. Department of Education is important. It's your proof that outside evaluators have carefully reviewed an institution's programs and policies.
Applicants with a GPA lower than a 2.5 but a 2.0 or above may seek admission by submitting passing scores from the WGU program required basic skills test (e.g. Praxis CORE). An Enrollment Counselor can help you best determine whether you have the sufficient background for entry into your program of choice.
If your parents are high earners, you might assume you won't get any financial aid to help pay for college. But that's not necessarily the case. The Department of Education doesn't have an official income cutoff to qualify for federal financial aid.
Western Governors University costs $10,336 after scholarships and grants, with 76% of students receiving financial aid and an average aid package of $4,141.
It varies widely. Some WGU courses are easier, some much more difficult. Much faster, easier, cheaper at WGU by any measure. I completed the entire course in less than 5 hours, and while I am a software dev, I don't really know Python.
The average student loan debt amount is slightly over $30,000. However, many borrowers owe $50,000 or more in student loan debt. This isn't impossible to overcome using the right repayment methods.
